ENHANCING LEADERSHIP, ADMINISTRATIVE AND TECHNICAL SKILLS
It is a fact that many of our administrators now are very young, although very energetic and active, they are inexperienced in terms of management skills. Though they may be graduates of the program, they lack the competencies required of a manager. On the other hand, we have a lot of our heads who are experienced, however, they were put in the position without the technical competencies required of the programs.
It is said, that one must know the product she is selling, otherwise, she could never sell and make the product achieve its goal for satisfaction. It is our sincere intention to make this gathering not only for camaraderie and friendship, but for sharing of both knowledge and skills necessary to run effectively the Hospitality Management program.
ADMINISTRATIVE SKILL
Perhaps you would agree with me that many of us learned to be administrators out of experience, with all the ups and downs, success and failure on different management situations. More often than not, we were criticized or even received adverse reactions to some decisions.
It is for this reason that the AAHRMEI would like to make a follow up session / seminar in order to continue serving our members, both the new and young administrators who may need the technical skill, and the seasoned administrators who might benefit from the sharing. Likewise our faculty members also need to prepare for career advancement.
Let us first consider the difference between a leader from an administrator so that we can identify ourselves as to what we are.
A leader refers to the person who moves ahead of others to serve as guide for the rest of the people who are looking up at him and following him with the full trust that they would be okay and they would reach their destination. As a leader, he is responsible of planning, innovating, setting objectives and implementing strategies. He has to create a scenario, bring the people together and make them feel that it is a place to belong to, rather than a place where they are obliged to work.
What are the Qualities of a Good Leader?
Not everyone has the ability to lead, and for those who got the chance to serve as leader, let the following qualities form part of you:
1. Passion and sincere commitment.
2. Visionary
3. Humanitarian
4. Commands with authority and respect
5. Motivational
6. Risk taker
7. Courageous
8. Communication skill
Anything that we do must be done with passion or great enthusiasm. This is the quality that is
hard to maintain, because as human beings, with families to take care, there are times when we are affected with our emotions. That situation requires us of our skill for managing our own selves.
Are we committed to the function assigned to us? If so, we finish what we have started for the sake of the organization. We don’t allow ourselves to be tempted for comfort and to be affected by situations.
A good leader is visionary. He always looks forward to the future, while considering the present practices and trends to determine the contingent steps to take. He uses a lot of imagination, planning, and decision making.
A good leader must have the interest of humankind at heart at all times. This quality requires a lot of consideration for others.
A good leader must have command over his people. With a simple statement, he is able to get the respect and trust of his people. There is a need to establish integrity, trust and respect so that people will follow.
Leadership requires a lot of human relations. Young or old personnel tend to demand a little of motivation, respect and appreciation. This can be done through an effective communication.
Running an organization requires a lot of decision making which could either be a success or a failure. A good leader is a risk taker. It requires a lot of intellectual estimations and judgment; a lot of common sense.
Being the lead person, he must be courageous. This requires enough preparation and confidence, to be able to perform and start a move.
Communication skill is the most important asset of a good leader. With or without a formal schooling, once a person can express what he thinks and what he feels in a simple but understandable manner, he can be a good leader.
An Invitational Leadership. What could be the characteristics of an inviting leader?
Assumptions:
1. There must be respect for each of your men.
Consider everyone in the organization as valuable and able. Never show favoritism to anyone privately or publicly.
2. There must be trust.
If we consider every faculty and staff as part of our organization, we must
trust them. If we assign something, believe and trust that they can do it. Empower
them.
3. You must care for your people.
A simple act of care and concern can be a lifetime memory for those you care.
4. Be optimistic.
Always be positive that something good will come out. Consider that everyone has untapped capability, cultivate and help him develop, rather than competing with him.
5. Be transparent with your intentions.
Make them know what you want for your college or your company. Practice the participative management. Value their ideas, it might be of help to the total direction of your plans.
“Make a model to make the existing obsolete”
What are the focuses of an inviting leader?
1. People – (openness to his people, serve as inspiration to them, make the “pinaka”.
2. Place – “the appearance of the surroundings speaks of the kind of leader you are”
3. Policy – always focus on the company’s policies as your guide
4. Programs – “programs are good if it takes outsiders in, and insiders out”
5. Processes – all must be involved in processes. There must be ownership
Should there be conflict among our men, how can we handle it? The following 6 C’s can be our guide:
1. Concern – what is the concern/issue? Is it legal, moral or safety issue? (Have an insight to
understand the issue. This calls for a skill.)
2. Confer – discuss and listen honestly without bias.
3. Consult – this is the beginning of a formal stage. Witnesses and documentation is necessary
4. Confront – investigate. Do I have the documentation of what I did as the head? Do I have sufficient
authority?
5. Combat – not to fight but to change or eliminate the situation but not the person. “Do I really have
concern for my people?
6. Conciliation – don’t forget to go back to normality. Forgive and forget.
What is an Ethical Leader?
An ethical leader is one who does things according to standards.
Levels of Ethical Leadership
1. As human being – observe considerable diplomacy in dealing with one another
2. As public servant – respect the rights and the trust of stakeholders
3. As educator – to be familiar with the academic advances and technology. (Transformational)
4. As administrator – take all opportunities to change for the better
5. As educational leader – go beyond self interest, do something heroic, orchestrate the resources at
the same time remain humane and considerate.
